My mother's neighbor at the cemetary. Someone had placed these flowers there amidst all the Christmas wreaths. But the wind had blown them all helter skelter.

I put them back. Just seemed like the right thing to do.

Tonight, I scared myself. I lost my temper in a major way.

I was/am enraged. Yelling myself hoarse. Vindictive.

I was mad. In all senses of the word.

All the frustration, hurt, isolation, fatigue....All the disappointment, the indifference...the loss of self.

All that pain. All at once. Like a volcano erupting. A swirling, roiling, inexplicably hot caldera of everything that has gone wrong.

And now...nothing. 

I am no longer who I was. That guy is finally dead.

My day job is usually behind a mixing desk...not the camera. But today that was different as our usual shooter was out on assignment.

So I grabbed this one for our website. It was the only one the artist approved (I was allowed exactly 2 shots).

Lighting was a mixture of incandescent and a warm (ish) LED Litepanel located overhead, and camera left, respectively.

Feel OLD

SO this week, I had a lovely arthritis attack as well as some kind of gastrointestinal malady that plagued me all week (I swear the KFC had NOTHING to do with it). I notice more and more grey hairs now...but unlike my dad, who managed to look somewhat distinguished with his salt and pepper 'do...I just look old.


So old, in fact that I had to resort to copping other (younger) folks' musical selects to check out...I have NO CLUE what the hell is out there these days. Ironic, considering what I'm supposed to be doing for a living (studio engineer that is exposed to 6-7 different acts a week).

So anyway...I've been on this tip for awhile now: The Weeknd (yes, its spelled like that)

And this chick too: Lana Del Rey (who incidentally, can write the soundtrack to my dreams/nightmares anytime....)

Interesting....

So, I've kind of been in a shooting slump. Didn't like anything I shot. Still brought the camera around, but inevitably, it would stay in the bag.

The self -critique grew worse and because I absolutely HATED everything I shot...I didn't shoot. Anything....Didn't even feel like it....But still, I would lug the camera around...just in case.

But then, even that simple action felt like defeat.

"Why am I lugging this POS around if I'm not even going to use it...?"

"I suck at this..."

So, I left it home.

Its been there for the better part of a week now and its an interesting thing.

When I leave in the morning to hit the day job, I don't even take a bag anymore. I'm travelling light: personal iPhone, wallet, keys, and the work Blackberry. That's it. (well, smokes and a lighter too...)

I've NEVER travelled this light before, ever. Its kind of liberating...I can walk around tighter crowds...get in closer to things...walk faster. No camera. No bag.

I haven't missed shooting yet, but I'm sure that will come. It's kind of the same way with me and my day job. I'm a studio engineer at a very busy facility. We record approximately 3-4 artists per week; plus the mixing, mastering, and editing associated with it. There are days when I just cant possibly listen to anything critically anymore, so I don't....No personal listening, no iPod, no radio....just the ambient sounds of NYC, and life in general....Nothing added that wasn't already there.

It often works, lending me some time to aurally reset. Hopefully, this will translate to shooting as well.
